January 6-Epiphany

January 6, my birthday, is the sixth day of the year as well as epiphany.  Epiphany is the climax of the Advent or Christmas season beginning on the twentieth of December to the sixth of January.  In Latin, Hispanic and some places in Europe, Epiphany is known as Three Kings' Day.  This painting portrays the Epiphany, or the showing or revealing, of Jesus.  His mother, Mary, gently cradles him in her arms, even though his chubby body is larger than her lap.
The colors of Epiphany are gold and white.  These colors represent celebration, newness and hope.
Traditionally, a bean is baked into the Epiphany galette or King's cake, made of puff pastry.  When a family gathered to eat the cake, the person to receive the bean in their piece of cake would be crowned king.

Other events to occur on the sixth of January:
-The birth of Joan of Arc (1412)
-Theodore Roosevelt dies (1919)
-George W. Bush wins presidential election (2001)
-Carl Sandburg, author is born (1878)
-New Mexico became the 47th state (1912)
